Inside Tenerife’s Brain Cave

Cueva de los Cerebros is a special boat dive off Tenerife’s west coast, where a shallow volcanic lava tube leads into darkness, hidden chambers and rare marine life.

Its modest depth is deceptive, so Aquarius reserves this dive for Advanced divers with at least 30 logged dives and suitable conditions.

Diving Cueva de los Cerebros

From the boat, we descend toward the cave entrance at around 10 meters. The broad opening leads into a volcanic tube where the blue Atlantic gradually fades, the rocky floor rises and falls, and the main passage opens into smaller branches and chambers. In some areas, fresh and salt water meet to create a shimmering halocline.

The cave takes its name from the rare brain-shaped sponges growing in its protected darkness. Bigeyes, Canarian lobsters, shrimp and brittle stars may be found around the walls and crevices, while stingrays sometimes rest beneath ledges near the entrance. The cave forms part of a Special Area of Conservation, making respectful movement especially important.

Depth is not the main challenge here. Darkness, overhead sections, ocean swell and the cave’s fragile interior require calm divers, clear communication and a carefully controlled route. Aquarius plans the dive around the actual conditions rather than following a fixed route regardless of the sea.

The confined passages and vulnerable rocky bottom show why clean trim and controlled finning matter, skills we develop further during our XTend on TB Trim and Buoyancy program.

Rare life in the darkness – Brain-shaped sponges, Canarian lobsters and shrimp inhabit the cave’s shaded interior.
From blue water to volcanic chambers – Follow the changing light through an extensive lava tube with branches and hidden spaces.
Booking – This dive operates only when exactly 4 divers are booked, with a €30 supplement per person. Good buoyancy control and recent diving experience are required. Participation depends on conditions and Aquarius approval.
