PADI Tec 40 requirements

To start the PADI Tec 40 course, please make sure you meet the following:

Minimum age: 18 years.

PADI Advanced Open Water Diver or equivalent.

PADI Enriched Air Diver or equivalent.

At least 10 enriched air dives deeper than 18 meters/60 feet.

PADI Deep Diver or proof of at least 10 dives to 30 meters/100 feet.

Minimum 30 logged dives.

Diver Medical Statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months.

Current dive insurance required.

Tec 40 eLearning completed before your first class.

Qualifying certifications from other training organizations may apply. Ask us before booking if there is any doubt.

Tec 40 is where technical diving stops being an idea and becomes a real training commitment. You are no longer only extending depth. You are learning how to plan, configure, communicate and respond when a dive includes limited decompression.

At Aquarius, your Tec 40 training is taught directly by Harry, your TecRec Instructor, and treated as a standards-led entry into technical diving, not just another certification card. With 33+ years as a PADI Instructor and 25+ years of technical-diving experience, his background includes demanding North Sea and Black Sea conditions, wreck research and long-term SCUBAPRO technical equipment expertise.

Tenerife gives us a comfortable Atlantic training setting, boat-based logistics from Las Galletas and deeper sites that can be reached without long walks carrying heavy equipment.

For extra safety background, DAN explains why setting breathing-gas limits and practicing responses are essential parts of safe dive planning.

FAQ’s PADI Tec 40

What is the PADI Tec 40 course?

PADI Tec 40 is the first main step from recreational diving into technical diving. It introduces limited decompression diving, technical equipment setup, gas planning, team procedures and emergency-response skills.

It is not a course for simply going deeper. The goal is to build the discipline, control and planning habits needed for technical diving.

Who can join the PADI Tec 40 course?

You need to be at least 18 years old, certified as PADI Advanced Open Water Diver and PADI Enriched Air Diver or equivalent, and meet the required deep-diving and logged-dive experience.

You also need current dive insurance and a Diver Medical Statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months.

How does the PADI Tec 40 course work?

The course combines Tec 40 eLearning, practical application sessions, equipment preparation, dive planning and four training dives over 4 days.

You work on technical configuration, gas planning, decompression awareness, team diving, stage handling and emergency procedures such as gas-sharing, free-flow management and shutdown awareness.

What is included in the standard Tec 40 course?

The standard Tec 40 package includes four training dives, practical applications, Tec 40 eLearning, air for the included single or double cylinder setup, one complete stage/decompression cylinder with decompression gas up to 50%, wing with backplate and harness, longhose regulator configuration and PADI Tec 40 certification.

Decompression gases are included for the minimum course requirements only. Extra gas, extra dives or additional equipment needs must be confirmed separately.

What will I achieve after PADI Tec 40?

After successful certification, you are qualified to make limited decompression dives to a maximum depth of 40 meters/130 feet, using air or enriched air, with up to 10 minutes of required decompression.

You also learn to use enriched air nitrox with up to 50% oxygen for decompression, making Tec 40 the foundation for continuing into PADI Tec 45 and Tec 50.
