PADI Open Water Diver requirements

The PADI Open Water Diver course is your first full scuba certification. At Aquarius, you complete your eLearning, confined-water training and four open water dives with personal instructor support in Tenerife.

Minimum age required: 10 years.

Comfortable in the water.

No previous scuba certification needed.

Medical fitness to dive is required.

FAQ’s PADI Open Water Diver

When should I start the PADI Open Water Diver eLearning?

You can start the PADI Open Water Diver eLearning before you arrive in Tenerife.

It allows you to complete the theory at home, in your own time and in your own language. Once you arrive at Aquarius, we check your theory progress and continue with the practical part of the course.

Please note that once the PADI eLearning has been assigned or activated, that part of the course is non-refundable.

What is included in the PADI Open Water Diver course?

The course includes PADI eLearning, confined-water training and four open water dives with one of our instructors.

You learn how to use scuba equipment, control your buoyancy, handle common underwater situations and dive safely with a buddy. Dive insurance and the use of Scubapro dive equipment are included in the course price.

After successful completion, you receive the internationally recognized PADI Open Water Diver certification.

Do I need scuba experience before starting?

No, the PADI Open Water Diver course is made for non-certified divers.
You do need to be comfortable in the water and medically fit to dive.

The minimum age is 10 years, and younger divers receive a Junior Open Water Diver certification with age-related depth and supervision limits.

Are the open water dives from shore or boat?

The first open water dives are normally done from shore because this gives a controlled and comfortable training environment.

The final dives may be from shore or boat, depending on weather conditions, student comfort and logistics. We always choose the option that gives the safest and best training result.

What can I do after becoming a PADI Open Water Diver?

After certification, you can dive with a buddy to a maximum depth of 18 meters/60 feet, within the limits of your training and experience.

Good next steps are PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, PADI Enriched Air Diver Nitrox and buoyancy training. These help you build more confidence, enjoy longer dives where appropriate and improve your control underwater.
