To start the PADI DSMB Diver course, please make sure you meet the following:

Minimum age: 12 years.

PADI Junior Open Water Diver, PADI Open Water Diver or equivalent certification.

Valid dive insurance required.

Scubapro dive equipment, DSMB and spool use are included unless stated otherwise in the package details.

DSMB deployment looks simple when it goes well, but it can become messy when buoyancy, line control, current and task loading all happen at the same time. That is why we break the skill down before asking you to do it underwater.

In Tenerife, this is a very useful skill for boat diving, deeper recreational dives, wreck dives and any situation where you want better surface visibility before ascent. At Aquarius, we focus on clean preparation, calm deployment and staying in control from start to finish.

For extra safety background, DAN explains why DSMB reels or spools should not be clipped to the diver during deployment.

FAQ’s PADI DSMB Diver

What is the PADI DSMB Diver course?

The PADI DSMB Diver course teaches certified divers how to use a delayed surface marker buoy safely and effectively. A DSMB helps mark your position before ascent, making you more visible to boats, surface support and your dive team.

You also learn how to prepare the buoy, manage the spool or reel, control the line and deploy the DSMB while maintaining buoyancy, trim and awareness.

Who can join the PADI DSMB Diver course?

You must be at least 12 years old and certified as PADI Junior Open Water Diver, PADI Open Water Diver or equivalent.

You do not need to be an advanced diver to start. You should simply be comfortable in the water and ready to improve one of the most useful practical skills for boat diving, deeper dives and more independent recreational diving.

How does the PADI DSMB Diver course work?

The standard course can normally be completed in 1 day and includes PADI eLearning, dry practice and 2 open-water training dives.

During the course, you learn about DSMB types, spools and reels, stowing the equipment, preparing for deployment and sending the DSMB up while staying controlled underwater. The combined DSMB + XTend on TB package follows the 3-day XTend structure.

Do I need my own DSMB and spool?

No. DSMB and spool use are included unless stated otherwise in the package details.

If you already own your own DSMB, spool or reel, you can bring it. Training with your own equipment can be useful, but the setup must be suitable for the course and accepted by your instructor before use.

If you want your own DSMB and spool before or after the course, you can also buy them at the dive center for a very reasonable price.

What can I do after becoming a PADI DSMB Diver?

After certification, you can use your DSMB skills on dives within your certification level, experience and local conditions. You will have better awareness of line control, ascent visibility, buddy contact and controlled stops.

Good next steps are XTend on TB Trim and Buoyancy, PADI Deep Diver or PADI Wreck Diver. DSMB skills fit especially well with deeper dives and wreck dives, where controlled ascents, surface visibility and better task management become even more useful.
